ENR & Trade - Research and Policy Development

  • Working with an international energy organisation on policy documentation for cross-border oil & gas transit and trade.
  • Research contributions on Eastern Africa electricity power generation, transmission and cross border trade.
  • Part of the team in the Extractives Hub (London and Dundee), a DFID funded platform for country laws and regulations in oil & gas and mining.
  • Part of a Taskforce advising an Eastern African country’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
  • Part of a Taskforce advising on development of a regional international arbitration centre in Africa.
  • Working with the Strathmore University’s Extractives Baraza on a publication on mining laws in Kenya.
  • Part of a team researching into Kenya's oil & gas legislation on production sharing, local content and community engagement. 

Training and Capacity Building

  • Co-organizing the annual East Africa International Arbitration Conference (EAIAC), together with GBS Africa and I-Arb Africa. EAIAC has been for over 5 years, bringing together arbitration practitioners, governments, and private sector from across the globe to an annual conference in a different African city each year for capacity building and networking. 
  • Training government parastatals on dispute risk mitigation and dispute resolution in: PPPs and public procurement; PPAs and power transactions; and in oil & gas and mining.
  • Working with sector stakeholders on community engagement, public participation and gender issues in Kenya’s energy and extractives sectors.
  • Speaking and training in various workshops and conferences in investment, ENR and dispute resolution globally. 

Dispute Risk Assessment and Mitigation

  • Advising an East African power project on dispute risk avoidance and mitigation, including negotiating enforcement of contractor performance guarantees and delay damages. 
  • Advising a Tanzanian independent power producer (IPP) in an International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitration against a Tanzanian state corporation, and in recognition and enforcement proceedings of the multi-million-dollar award under the New York Convention in Tanzania and in the UK.
  • Advising a Mozambique fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company in its corporate matters and representation in international arbitration and proceedings before the English Commercial Court. 
  • Advising foreign investors of a 5-Star hotel in Rwanda on strategy and pre-dispute matters.
